The scrotum itches – What is behind it?

Definition

Itching in the testicular area is not uncommon and can be intensified by sweating in particular. Itching in the crotch is often caused by insufficient hygiene. But other medical causes can also be hidden behind the symptom itching.

Fungi, bacteria, mites or other pathogens can cause similar symptoms. A dermatologist can provide clarity here and determine the cause. However, a family doctor or urologist can also be helpful in making a diagnosis. Classical causes are: lack of intimate hygiene and care Detergent allergy Scrubbing due to tight clothing Inflammation of the testicles due to germs (fungi, bacteria, viruses, mites, …) Venereal diseases (crabs, chlamydia, gonorrhea, scabies, …)

Causes

There are several causes for itchy testicles. If washing of the intimate region is neglected and sweat and germs accumulate, itching can occur. In most cases, cleaning the intimate region in the shower or bathtub is sufficient to allow the skin to breathe for a short time.

However, a lack of intimate hygiene is not the only cause. Intimate hygiene also plays a role. Especially with dry scrotum skin, the skin is irritated and begins to itch.

In the worst case, the dry heat in the underpants can cause the skin to chafe. Too tight underwear can also cause irritation by rubbing the skin. In addition, you should also be alert to new detergents and consider whether this is a possible allergic reaction.

An infection with germs such as bacteria or viruses but especially fungi on the scrotum are also conceivable as a cause of itching. If a rash occurs in addition to the itching, this can also indicate a fungal infection. It should also be possible to exclude the possibility of a genital herpes outbreak or a venereal disease such as gonorrhea, crabs or chlamydia.

In scabies (scabies) the testicles are actually always affected and in addition to severe itching, small papules appear which can also affect the shaft of the penis. In order to find the right cause, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist, who deals with skin and sexually transmitted diseases from his professional background. Alternatively, urologists and general practitioners are also a good place to go for itching of the scrotum.

Fungi such as Candida albicans live naturally on the human skin or in the intestine. As a rule, however, the immune system and other germs that colonize humans ensure that there is no excessive spread. Poor hygiene or factors such as stress, which weaken the immune system, can lead to an imbalance and a germ can spread particularly well.

Often men then notice a burning and itching in the area of the scrotum and penis as well as a reddish rash and unusual smell. The skin can become flaky and sometimes swelling of the scrotum or penis can occur. A doctor can prescribe an antimycotic that can stop the fungal infection.
