The swelling of lymph nodes in the neck

The lymph nodes are an important component of the body’s own defense system. In a healthy person, most lymph nodes cannot be palpated. In a scarlet fever infection, the lymph nodes react to the bacteria and their toxins and more defence cells are formed, which is why the lymph nodes swell and become palpable.

Lymph nodes that swell due to a bacterial disease can be painful and are movable in relation to their surroundings. The lymph node swelling is usually palpable on both sides. As the disease heals, the lymph nodes also swell again. How dangerous is a swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck?-

The abdominal pain

Scarlet fever sufferers often have a feeling of illness affecting the whole body and can also get stomach aches in the course of the illness. This can come by the illness itself or also by the antibiotic, since these have frequently as side effect belly pain and failure. Particularly small children cannot describe yet exactly, which complaints they have and refer therefore indisposition often to the belly. In addition to the abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea can also occur.

Vomiting

With scarlet fever, the affected person is generally very flabby and ill, which can be seen in all parts of the body. Nausea and also vomiting can occur. Since the affected persons often do not eat much solid food, only liquid is vomited. In addition to the illness itself, the therapy with antibiotics or painkillers can also cause stomach pain and vomiting. Especially on an empty stomach, painkillers like ibuprofen can cause nausea.

The neck pain

Neck pain can have different causes. A complete immobility is mostly a tension or vertebral blockage, which can be caused by lying down incorrectly. In the context of an infectious disease, however, neck pain must always be considered in the context of the possibility of a meningitis or even an inflammation of the meninges.

This is a serious complication in some bacterial diseases and is an emergency. Patients with suspected meningitis should visit a hospital quickly. You can find more information about meningitis here.
