The treatment | Numbness in the hand

The treatment

The treatment is always based on the cause. In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a night splint and short-term painkillers can be taken. Another option is to apply a local cortisone injection in the carpal tunnel.

However, in many cases the surgical splitting of the carpal ligament is ultimately performed. In case of numbness after a stroke, the therapy is rather limited. In this case it is of great importance to make the exercises for movement and fine motor skills as consistent as possible.Polyneuropathy is treated by the therapy of the underlying disease.

Symptomatically, however, neuropathic pain can be treated with special painkillers. Epilepsy medication or antidepressants are suitable for this. Special ointments and plasters for anaesthesia are also helpful.

In the case of a herniated disc, certain exercises of physiotherapy as well as short-term painkillers can alleviate the pain. In very pronounced cases a surgical therapy can be considered. A sudden reduction of pain and increasing paralysis is an absolute emergency and must be evaluated immediately by a doctor. These articles may also be of interest to you:

The duration

The duration of a numbness or paraesthesia depends on the cause. After a stroke or a central cause, the symptoms may heal completely in the course of the disease, but in some cases they may persist. In the case of a herniated disc, the symptoms can be recurrent and become chronic. In the case of polyneuropathy, healing of the underlying disease is important, but the course is more likely to be chronic.

The prognosis

Sensitivity disorders that arise due to an acute illness, such as a stroke or inflammation, have a better chance of being completely cured than those caused by a chronic illness (diabetes mellitus). In the case of peripheral nerve damage, it depends on the severity of the damage. In case of carpal tunnel syndrome, the symptoms can disappear within days to weeks.
