The Veneer | An overview of prosthetics

The Veneer

If the shape as well as the color of an anterior tooth, i.e. one of the front teeth that first catch the eye when smiling and speaking, deviates from the patient’s wishes, it is possible to apply so-called “veneers”. Veneers are thin ceramic shells which, after a thin layer of the tooth has been removed, are glued to the front of the tooth and thus correct undesirable deviations in the shape and color of the tooth. Here you can learn everything about the topic: Veneer

The partial crown

If a caries destroys the crown of the tooth only partially, but to a greater extent than it must be the case with an inlay filling, an inlay, it is not necessary to replace the entire crown of the tooth with a crown right away, but it is possible to make a partial crown. This replaces parts of the natural tooth crown. It usually covers one side of the tooth completely, similar to a crown, while the other, intact side of the tooth can remain standing. Like an inlay or crown, the tooth is ground to a specific shape after the removal of the caries, so that a partial crown can be made in the laboratory to fit exactly, which is then cemented or glued in place.

The crown

If a tooth is so weakened by caries or other circumstances that the natural tooth crown is destroyed, it can be replaced by an artificial crown. The dentist grinds the tooth in a certain shape and removes all the destroyed or decayed areas, so that a new crown can be fixed on the resulting stump. The crown can be made of metal compounds, which can also be tooth-colored coated, or ceramic. The crown is made in the dental laboratory and then cemented or glued to the tooth stump.

The dental bridge

If a tooth is lost, which is limited by two teeth, it can be replaced by inserting a bridge. For this purpose, the neighboring teeth, i.e. those bordering the gap, are ground down. As with the crown, the crowns of these teeth are replaced.

The bridge consists of the two crowns of the neighboring teeth and a connecting so-called bridge element, which replaces the lost tooth. As with a bridge, here we have bridge pillars and the link that spans the gap. It is also possible to replace several teeth with one bridge.Normally, several teeth have to be ground down and included as stabilizing bridge abutments. There are also other types of dental bridges (e.g. a free end bridge, or an adhesive bridge).
