Therapy and treatment | Tonsillitis in the baby

Therapy and treatment

Babies under three months of age should be taken to the doctor early if they develop symptoms of illness, such as fever. If purulent plaques are visible, older children should also be taken to the pediatrician on the same day. Breathlessness in a baby is an acute emergency situation and must be clarified directly by a doctor.

In most cases the therapy of tonsillitis is purely symptomatic, as it is often caused by a viral infection. The doctor may prescribe antipyretic and analgesic medication. Furthermore, it helps the children if they get easily swallowed food and drink a lot.

However, fruit juices and milk are not recommended. In the case of bacterial tonsillitis, the children are given antibiotics, which should be given exactly as the doctor instructs in order to prevent the pathogens from multiplying again. Complications are rare if antibiotics are given in time. In rare cases, however, blood poisoning by the bacteria is possible, which makes immediate hospitalization of the baby necessary. If the condition of the child does not improve within a few days under antibiotic therapy, the pediatrician should be consulted again.

Homeopathy

There are various natural or homeopathic remedies that can be given for sore throats. However, especially with babies it is important not to rely solely on homeopathic remedies. A baby with fever and purulent tonsils should always be presented to a pediatrician, who can then assess whether a homeopathic therapy is sufficient or whether an antibiotic must be given.

When does the baby need antibiotics?

Many tonsillitis is purely viral and therefore cannot be treated with antibiotics, as antibiotics only work against bacteria. However, if purulent deposits on the tonsils are visible and the baby has had a rapid rise in fever, this indicates a bacterial infection. In the case of bacterial tonsillitis, antibiotics must be administered at an early stage to prevent possible late complications. Such differentiation can only be ensured by a throat swab.
