Therapy | Dizziness triggered by the eye

Therapy

The therapy of dizziness depends strongly on the cause. If drugs or other toxic substances are responsible for the vertigo, they should be discontinued immediately. Dizziness can be treated with so-called antivertiginosa.

These “anti-v vertigo medications” include some antihistamines such as dimenhydrinate or the calcium channel blocker flunarizine. Their mode of action is mainly directed against nausea and vomiting. The drug treatment of vertigo should be supplemented above all by physical exercises.

They are used for postural training, to avoid incorrect posture and to correct incorrect movements. They also train physical balance. Targeted maneuvers to end the vertigo attack are used, for example, in benign positioning vertigo.

Certain changes in the body’s position cause the small stones of the inner ear that have come loose from the semicircular canals to be returned to their original position. If the basic problem lies in the area of the eyes, regular eye checks should be carried out by a specialist. Visual defects should be corrected as soon as possible with appropriate glasses.

Incorrectly calculated visual acuity for the new visual aid should always be taken into consideration and, if necessary, adjusted correctly afterwards. The therapeutic spectrum of vertigo is extensive and should be supplemented by appropriate behavioral therapy if the patient is suffering greatly. In rare cases, surgical removal of the triggering factor, for example by corrections to the eye, is the only solution to eliminate the dizziness.

Duration and prognosis

The duration of a vertigo attack always depends on the exact cause, but in more than half of the cases no organic cause for the vertigo attacks can be found in the affected person. However, if an underlying disease is detected, it can be treated and the dizziness relieved. In addition, a recurrence of the dizziness can be prevented. If at least risk factors for the occurrence of vertigo can be identified, the affected person can try to change his or her lifestyle accordingly.
