Therapy

To treat dry lips, creams like calendula ointment or milking grease are usually sufficient. These are particularly refatting and strengthen the lipid layer of the cell envelope. Paradoxically, water itself dries out the skin, so constant moisturizing of dry lips is counterproductive.

Therefore, lip balm with a flavor should also be avoided, as children tend to lick it off and thus moisturize the lips. Care sticks with jojoba or sesame oil are recommended, as they contain neither flavor nor artificial ingredients. They are inexpensive and can be obtained from a pharmacy.

A well-known household remedy is to apply honey to the dry lips, as it promotes healing and greases the lips. As long as it is not licked off (see above), this is a cheap and highly recommended household remedy. Particularly in winter, sufficient protection against the cold must also be ensured, for example with a face mask.

An adequate fluid intake combats the basic problem, warm tea, buttermilk or mineral water are particularly suitable. Often the cause is also too dry room air, especially in winter when the heating is running at full speed and the rooms are rarely ventilated. Remedy creates for example an air humidifier, or shock ventilation.

In case of iron or vitamin deficiency, a sufficient substitution in tablet or effervescent form is indicated. Hashimoto disease can be successfully treated by substitution of the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Kaufmann’s Kindercreme® can be applied to any part of the skin.

It is free of preservatives and therefore very gentle. It also has a water-repellent effect, which is very beneficial to the skin on the lips. Kaufmann Kindercreme® contains zinc and thus contributes to the healing of wounds. The cream is recommended for the treatment of dry and brittle lips.

Prognosis and prevention

As the skin usually regenerates very quickly, a significant improvement can be expected after only a few days with sufficient care. It is also important to provide lasting care for the affected area to prevent re-germination. However, if the lips are already in an advanced stage of dryness, with inflammatory processes in a visible infection, household remedies should be avoided and a doctor should be consulted.

Then, if necessary, a therapy with cortisone or antibiotics is necessary. If children tend to brittle lips anyway, the lips should also be cared for preventively with a cold protection stick or a lip care stick. Often, however, this is precisely where the problem lies, since some lip protection sticks contain harmful or skin-intolerant ingredients that have not been sufficiently tested. It should not be saved here in the wrong place, their family doctor or pharmacist has surely an individually suitable recommendation.

With winter sports such as skiing or sledging, the so-called wind-chill effect can cause much lower temperatures at already low temperatures. Here a mouth guard, and/or a face mask helps. Other topics that might interest you: All topics on dermatology under: Dermatology A-Z
