Therapy during pregnancy

In the case of conjunctivitis triggered by mechanical stimuli, the pregnant woman should simply wait and see. As a rule, the symptoms disappear on their own after a few days and do not require additional therapy. If an allergy is the cause, the allergens should be avoided as much as possible.

If the symptoms are very severe, treatment with antiallergic eye drops is possible, but should always be discussed with the doctor. Even viral conjunctivitis often heals by itself. With herpes viruses, the administration of acyclovir as eye drops is possible.

Caution is advised when administering antibiotics. Eye drops and eye ointments are preferable to antibiotics in tablet form. Antibiotic eye drops with a certain active substance are used, which is harmless to the unborn child.

Duration of conjunctivitis

Usually conjunctivitis heals quickly with adequate treatment and lasts for a short time. However, there are forms of conjunctivitis that can recur (especially herpes infections). Complications can also occur.
