Therapy eye infection

As soon as the pathogen is identified, a targeted treatment with antibiotic eye drops can be carried out. Here it is important to start directly with a high concentration and to treat only for a short period of time, as this is the best way to fight the pathogens causing the eye infection. If the dosage is too low, the pathogens may become resistant to the drug, making follow-up therapy more difficult. The eye drops are initially given every half hour and then the interval is extended to every two hours.

This frequency should be maintained until the end. After a period of 7-10 days the therapy can be stopped. Patients with the so-called mucomycosis must be operated on immediately, as the time pressure no longer allows for drug therapy.

In order to be as effective as possible against the infection of the eye, it is important that the medication reaches and covers the ocular surface as well as possible. To do this, the patient looks up, the lower eyelid is pulled down slightly so that a gap is formed between the eyelid and the eye. The medication in the form of eye drops is then dropped into this gap.

The dropper bottle should not touch the eyelashes or eyes to prevent pathogens from entering the bottle. Then the eyes are closed and kept closed for two minutes. This allows the natural tear film to absorb the medication, so that it can act very evenly. An additional temporary squeezing of the tear-nose-paths while the eyes are closed can help to prevent the eye drops from running down the nose and thus fully taking effect in the eye.
