Therapy | Inflammation of the auricle

Therapy

The therapy of the inflammation of the auricle depends on its cause. If the inflammation is caused by bacteria, rapid antibiotic treatment is necessary. This is done locally by applying antibiotic-containing strips or drops in or on the ear.

The local therapy can also be supplemented by disinfecting compresses on the skin. In addition, however, it is usually necessary to take antibiotics in tablet form, or even to administer antibiotic-containing infusions. If this is the case, admission to hospital is necessary.

If fungi are identified as the trigger of the inflammation, effective medication is used against them. If chickenpox viruses are held responsible for the inflammation, drugs are prescribed against them. If the function of nerves in the facial region is impaired, this still makes the use of cortisone preparations necessary. Painkillers can also be prescribed for pain.

Prophylaxis

Prevention of auricular inflammation is only possible to a very limited extent. Ear cleaning should be performed very carefully, if at all, to avoid injuries caused by cotton swabs. In addition, contact with dirty water should be avoided. In case of known allergies, allergenic substances should also be avoided.

Prognosis

If treated in time, the prognosis of auricular inflammation is good. Rapid therapy is particularly necessary in the case of bacterial infections, as these can otherwise cause serious complications at the auricle. Shingles must also be treated quickly by a doctor to prevent serious damage to the nerves of the head. Therefore, a quick visit to the doctor has a significant influence on the healing of the inflammation without complications.
