Therapy | Inflammation on the palate

Therapy

There are two potential objectives in the treatment of inflammation of the palate: the therapy depends on the location and the type of inflammation

  • Treatment of the triggering disease
  • Alleviation of symptoms

To heal an inflammation of the oral mucosa, the use of mouth rinsing solutions or gels is generally recommended. If the mouth mucosa inflammation is caused by pathogens and not by systemic causes, antibiotics (against bacteria), antivirals (against viruses) and antifungals (against fungi) will help. In principle, disinfectants that are suitable for use in the oral cavity and reduce the germ count are also recommended.

Several medications can help to alleviate palatal pain:

  • Local anesthetic substances (e.g. Dynexan® mouth gel)
  • Conventional painkillers, (e.g. Ibuprofen)
  • Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids
  • Antihistamines against allergic reactions

In the case of tonsillitis, the therapy depends on the severity of the inflammation. Mild tonsillitis can be treated by mouth rinses and gargling itself.

In addition, remedies that have an anti-inflammatory and decongestant effect help. In order not to irritate the tonsils further by ingesting food, soft and cool food should be eaten. Cold drinks and sage/chamomile tea soothe sore throats.

Smoking, acid and strong spices, on the other hand, aggravate the symptoms. Various herbal solutions are suitable as household remedies for inflammation of the mucous membranes around the mouth and throat, which are used as tinctures or solutions for gargling and rinsing. Recommended are liquids containing sage, chamomile, fennel, star anise, clove, thymol, menthol or eucalyptus.

Common to all is a disinfecting, antibacterial effect. Available preparations often contain ready-made combinations of the above-mentioned active ingredients, although it should be noted that they are mostly alcohol-based.Depending on the preparation, the solution can be diluted with water and used for rinsing and gargling, but sometimes it is also possible to apply the solution selectively to the affected areas with a small brush. A doctor should always be consulted if the inflammation on the palate or generally in the mouth/throat area is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, tiredness, listlessness and aching limbs.

Even if the inflammation spreads noticeably over further mucous membrane areas of the mouth/throat area and makes it difficult to swallow or perhaps even breathe due to swelling, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Puss formation, especially in the area of the throat and/or palatine tonsils, indicates a bacterial infection, which should be treated as soon as possible by a doctor with antibiotics to prevent the dreaded spread of the bacteria. If pain in the area of the palate is noticeable or if there are even signs of an inflammation of the palate when looking in the mirror, you should first consult your treating family doctor. In many cases, an initial diagnosis can be made and – if necessary – therapy can be initiated. Only in the case of special questions or unclear findings can a referral to a registered ear, nose and throat doctor follow.
