Therapy of a silent heart attack

A silent heart attack is treated like any normal heart attack. Only the administration of painkillers can usually be avoided, since a silent heart attack is characterized by the absence of the otherwise typical pain. While the heart attack takes place and immediately afterwards, the therapy initially consists of oxygen administration and elevation of the upper body.

Because of the raised upper body, not too much blood flows back to the heart, so that the heart is relieved a little. Nitrates, i.e. vasodilators, are administered either into the vein or as a spray on the tongue. Blood thinners should also be given.

As with a “normal” heart attack, the constriction in the blood vessel should be removed at the nearest hospital. This is usually done with a stent. Alternatively, a bypass operation can be considered.

Since a silent heart attack is often caused by a non-cardiac (i.e. not from the heart) disease such as diabetes mellitus, this should be treated first and foremost. This can prevent further long-term damage or a new heart attack. Complications such as cardiac rhythm disturbances and heart failure (cardiac insufficiency) should also be treated with medication and closely monitored in the following years.

How can I prevent a new heart attack?

In order to prevent a renewed heart attack, one should treat above all the already existing basic illness. These are often heart diseases, but high blood pressure, diabetes (“diabetes”) or an imbalance in blood lipid values can also be present. All these diseases can be treated with medication.

In addition, it is recommended to participate in a rehabilitation program after a heart attack. This is where training courses on the health of the cardiovascular system take place. In addition, one learns how to slowly and carefully reload one’s own body after a heart attack. Especially physical activity and training prevent another heart attack in the long run. A balanced diet is also helpful.
