Therapy of an ISG blockade

General information

Initially, the acute pain should be relieved by painkillers. This prevents a relieving posture and the associated deterioration of the malposition. The drugs are usually both anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving and can either be injected directly into the affected joint or taken orally by tablets.

The advantage of direct injections is the reduced systemic effect of the drugs. Even an experienced chiropractor can achieve direct pain relief by successfully removing the blockage directly. After a manipulation, the patient should always walk a little so that the affected ligamentous apparatus returns to normal by itself through natural movement. In order to strengthen the ligaments and muscles, to correct incorrect posture and to prevent a renewed blockage of the sacroiliac joint, a blockade solution should always be followed by a longer period of physiotherapy.

The manual therapy of an ISG – blockage

ISG blockage is primarily a muscular problem that makes any movement in the lower back very painful. It is important to relieve most of the pain before manual therapy. This is mainly done by medication that allows pain-free movement.

Otherwise, two secondary problems can occur during therapy. With inadequate pain therapy, pain can become chronic despite the elimination of the cause and lead to permanent complaints in the lower back. On the other hand, painful movements in physiotherapy can lead to relieving postures and learning the wrong movement sequences.

Manual therapy includes interventions by physicians, chiropractors or physiotherapists to release the blockage with the help of certain grips and massage techniques. There are certain techniques that vary with the practitioner. An established method is the “cross grip”.

Here, the patient lies on his stomach and the therapist grips the patient from the non-affected side and mobilizes the joint to the front and side. In many cases, improvements occur directly after manual therapy. In the ideal case, the ISG blockage can be completely released in just a few sessions. Otherwise, additional exercises can be performed under supervision.
