Therapy of oily skin

The therapy of oily skin includes first of all the appropriate skin care, which has already been discussed in detail above. Basically, one can say that the treatment and care of oily skin depends on the severity of the disease. In case of slightly impure skin, the above described care with soap-free drugstore products for oily skin can be used in the morning and in the evening.

Facial tonics or facial steam baths can also help. However, if the skin is more severely impure, various active ingredients can be used. One active ingredient is bezoyl peroxide or antibiotic-containing drugs.

In addition the possibility of a UV irradiation comes, which can provide for cleaner skin. Bezoyl peroxide is an over-the-counter drug available from the pharmacy. It is usually applied in the form of a gel or cream. The bezoyl peroxide provides a peeling effect of the corneal cells.

Thus, the corneal cells that clog the sebaceous glands are removed. In addition, there is a positive effect against bacteria. However, one has to be careful with the drug, as side effects can also occur.

There may be an unpleasant burning, itching, drying and tightening of the skin, or the clinical picture may even be aggravated because the skin reacts reflexively against it. The active ingredient is available in various concentrations of 3-10%. One usually starts with a low concentration and observes whether side effects occur before increasing the concentration.

Before applying the drug, the skin should also be pre-cleaned. The gel can be applied thinly to affected areas a maximum of 2 times a day. Care should be taken with the drug because of its bleaching effect and avoid extensive UV radiation during the application of the drug.

UV light therapy, on the other hand, is already considered a largely outdated treatment option for impure skin. Because it has been found that UV-irradiation has in some cases increased the impurities rather than alleviating them. Moreover, UV radiation is basically a radiation exposure for the skin.

The skin ages much faster and is damaged by UV exposure. The effect of UV radiation is due to inhibition of the skin’s immune system. In this process, an overproduction of sebum and horny cells of the skin is reduced.

Even a drug therapy containing estrogens, such as the contraceptive pill, can very quickly and effectively curb impure skin. The reason for this is again the predominance of male sex hormones in impure oily skin. This cause can be directly counteracted with estrogen therapy.

Another useful form of therapy is relaxation therapy, because impure skin can also be induced by stress. There are various forms of autogenic training or muscle relaxation therapies. If the oily skin is another underlying disease, the focus is of course on treating the underlying disease as well as possible.

The skin is different from person to person. There are many different skin types and some people are more prone to oily skin than others. Oily skin appears oily and is usually poorly supplied with blood.

This makes the skin shiny and looks pale. The primary reason for this is that the sebaceous glands, which are in the skin almost all over our body, produce too much sebum. Normally, sebum production is 1-2g per day and the sebum has the important task of protecting the skin from external influences and maintaining its own moisture.

If the sebaceous glands are more active than normal, the above-mentioned skin condition occurs. This can have completely different causes. If oily skin appears again, this should be clarified by a dermatologist.

Together with the dermatologist, it can then be determined which reasons could be responsible for the skin reaction. The family predisposition to this is usually the first consideration here. It is often only a short phase in which the skin is sensitive and quickly becomes greasy.

This can usually be associated with certain life situations. These include, for example, situations in which a hormonal change in the body occurs. For example, the end of a pregnancy or discontinuation of the contraceptive pill are circumstances that change hormone levels.

But factors such as stress, alcohol consumption and diet also play a decisive role in the development of rapidly oily skin. The onset of puberty, which is also accompanied by severe hormonal changes, is often accompanied by phases of oily, impure skin. This can also manifest itself in a form of acne, which is usually very unpleasant for the young person concerned.

The phase in which oily skin occurs most frequently is between the ages of 10-18. Boys are generally more frequently affected by acne than girls. This is due to sex hormones of the androgen group, which are held responsible for the impure skin.

Girls who suffer from severe acne may therefore consider estrogen therapy. Under this therapy the skin condition usually improves considerably. However, this can vary from person to person.

In the case of severe bacterial inflammation, a smear should be taken from the pimples/papules to test them for the pathogen and possibly to take action against it with an antibacterial ointment. If stress is the determined reason for too much sebum production, stress reduction alone can improve the skin’s appearance. Suitable relaxation methods or so-called autogenic training can be learned and can be helpful in stress reduction. In case of hormone fluctuations without a recognizable reason, a blood analysis can help to find the cause of a possible hormone disorder.

Together with the dermatologist, it should be determined which reason applies to the affected person and which therapy works best for him/her. First and foremost, proper skin care is crucial. There are various home remedies that can help with oily skin.

However, caution is advised here. Masks made of yogurt, quark, honey, tea or apples can cause an infection of the impurities on the already damaged skin. For this reason, degreasing care products which can be purchased in drugstores or pharmacies are generally preferable to household remedies.

If they are not tolerated for various reasons or if good experience has been made with household remedies, they can of course still be used. However, before experimenting “wildly” with home remedies, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist and ask him for advice on appropriate care and any necessary therapy. Since in some cases permanent scars of acne can remain, which mostly occur together with oily skin, a specific consultation and therapy is recommended in these cases.

Since oily skin is very sensitive and tends to impurities, care is particularly important for regeneration. Due to excessive sebum production, pores become clogged and the skin tends to become inflamed. Special care must therefore be taken to ensure that the pores of the skin remain free.

Otherwise, unclean care can cause increased dirt, bacteria and worn skin cells to cause recurring problems. In addition, the additional development of pimples and blackheads can be caused by insufficient care of oily skin. In order to keep the skin clean now, the skin should be well cleansed at least in the morning and evening.

Common skin care products from the drugstore, a washcloth or a cloth are suitable for this purpose. The water should not be hot. After rinsing with warm water, you should rinse again with cold water, because the influence of warm water promotes sebum production.

You can also use peeling products from time to time to keep the skin pores free. However, the peeling should not be used too often, about once a week is quite sufficient. Because too much peeling can damage the skin.

When using skin care products, make sure to choose a product with a low fat content. For weak symptoms, a simple, surfactant-free cleansing water is recommended. In drugstores, there are also usually special products for an oily skin type.

It is also best to choose antibacterial and anti-irritant products. If possible, products with a not too high alcohol content should be used, because this can irritate the skin unnecessarily. Washing oily skin too often is not necessarily good either, as this can dry out the skin too much and change the natural skin flora.

This in turn can cause the skin to try to protect itself from dehydration by producing even more sebum, which ultimately leads to more oily skin. The cleansing products contain the following ingredients: The best results are usually achieved with a clean washcloth and a gentle cleansing milk. After washing, a little sebum can be removed with a clean, soft towel.

In drugstores or pharmacies there are products specially marked for oily skin. Oily creams or ointments and those with a high alcohol content should be avoided at all costs. In addition to the cleansing products, you can also apply a facial toner with a not too high alcohol content after cleansing the face.

This can best be spread over the face with a soft cotton pad. You can also use a face mask once or twice a week to reduce sebum. A steam bath is also suitable to open blocked pores again.

You can add lavender, lemon, rosemary, bergamot or rose petals to the steam bath. The water can be heated in a pot and the steam can be gently applied to the face. If the steam baths still contain camomile, for example, the skin will be additionally soothed. There are special oil-in-water products for oily skin.

These products release water and cool the skin. What remains is a balanced layer of moisture for the skin. In addition, there are special oil-free gels for daily care.

As a cosmetic effect, powder can be used to make the skin look less greasy. An important point, which is often forgotten, is to pay attention to a balanced diet that contains all nutrients. After all, malnutrition can also play a role in the development of oily skin.

  • Solvents with and without alcohol
  • Soaps, which are alkali salts of fatty acid, anionic (negatively charged), cationic (positively charged), amphoteric (positively as well as negatively charged) soaps or non-ionic (uncharged) soaps. Care should be taken to ensure that the product does not alter the natural pH of the skin. Acidic cleansing products are better in that they improve the acid protection of the skin through a lower pH value.

Oily or oily shiny skin is often unpleasant for the person affected.

The skin is very sensitive and has a tendency to impurities. It is therefore extremely important to take appropriate care of this skin. The type of care always depends on the cause, because of which the skin tends to produce more sebum and becomes oily.

In general, oily skin should not be treated with a moisturizing cream. The affected person should also be careful with products containing alcohol, as the skin is sensitive. Above all, care products are recommended that provide a lot of moisture and offer the skin important nutrients.

Such nutrients include amino acids, proteins and minerals. This creates a protective film on the skin, which the skin recognizes. As a result, it reduces sebum production and appears more matte.

However, this effect can take some time. Before applying the cream, the skin should be thoroughly but gently cleaned with a peeling and dried with a clean cloth. Creams that have a soothing effect on the skin in addition to moisturizing are best tolerated.

Ingredients such as fragrances or preservatives should rather be avoided. Ingredients such as provitamin B5, zinc or algae extract have a positive effect on oily skin. It is also important that the cream stabilizes the pH value of the skin.

Such creams specially developed for oily or acne-prone skin can be purchased in any drugstore or pharmacy. In case of severe acne, the choice of cream should be discussed with a dermatologist. Pimples are usually a consequence of oily skin.

The excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands leads to a blockage of the skin pores by skin scales, bacteria and dirt. The male sex hormones cause an over-stimulation of the sebaceous glands. In addition, this often leads to an increased formation of horny cells, which then block the sebaceous gland exits as scales.

In the first phase, this leads to the formation of closed, uninflamed blackheads. Since the sebum production does not stop now, however, more and more sebum is formed in the blackheads until the sebaceous gland is emptied to the outside. A small black spot is formed in the middle of the blackheads by the melanin production of certain producing cells (so-called melanocytes).

Through these now open blackheads the sebum can flow off. When bacteria begin to multiply, the tissue becomes inflamed. This explains the redness, swelling and local pain caused by the pimple.

The enzymes of the bacteria split the sebum. These sebum particles promote the inflammatory reaction. In addition, bacteria promote the production of further blackheads.

A distinctive form of pimples is acne disease. The causes of pimples are to be found in the causes of oily skin. This means that it is usually hormonal influences, especially during puberty, that promote oily skin and the development of pimples.

In addition, the incorrect use of care products, certain medications (often tranquilizers), stress, smoking, unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption, hereditary risk factors or mechanical influences can also play a role. Since the male sex hormones, the androgens, usually cause oily skin and thus pimples, pimples mostly affect young men. The location of the pimples depends on where most of the sebaceous glands are located. Most sebaceous glands are found on the face, neck, back, upper arms and shoulders, but also under the armpits, in the groin, genital and buttock regions.

The care of pimples affected skin is similar to that of oily skin. In the morning and evening, the skin should be washed with a gentle care product especially for impure skin. Alcohol-based facial toner should only be used if the pimple has already become inflamed.

Oily skin creams should also be avoided. Soap application can also impair and destroy the skin flora. However, the use of peelings is not recommended for pimpled skin.

As it leads to further mechanical traumas, which can cause further bacteria to enter the pimply skin. One should refrain from squeezing pimples, as the situation can be made worse if the pimples are not squeezed out properly. Squeezing can carry bacteria deep into the skin, and the inflammation can also be aggravated and cause ugly scars. Unfortunately, there are almost no possibilities for active prevention against oily skin, as it is the result of a predisposition. One can only generally take care not to expose one’s skin to excessive chemical, thermal or mechanical stress and avoid “skin-hostile” stimulants such as alcohol, caffeinated drinks and tobacco.
