Therapy of Pel-Ebstein fever

Pel-Ebstein fever itself can only be treated symptomatically. Antipyretic agents and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can be used for this purpose. Naproxen can also be used to effectively reduce fever if administered over three days.

Typically, naproxen can suppress tumor-related fever. However, fever of infectious cause often continues to occur. This phenomenon can be detected in a naproxen test, but is not considered a reliable differentiation criterion.

Since Pel-Ebstein fever often occurs in the context of a malignant underlying disease, therapy of this underlying disease is essential to get the fever under control. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is usually treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation. Surgical removal may also be necessary. Once the underlying disease is treated, Pel-Ebstein fever will eventually disappear.
