Therapy of torn muscle fibers between the ribs

If one or more muscle fiber tears have been diagnosed in the area of the ribcage and between the ribs, treatment should be started quickly, depending on the extent of the symptoms. As a rule, treatment is conservative, i.e. not surgical. The most important measure in the treatment of painful muscle fiber tears between the ribs is pain management.

This ensures that the patient does not lapse into gentle breathing and that the muscles between the ribs do not cramp unnecessarily. As pain-relieving drugs, ibuprofen, for example, can be taken in a dosage of 600 mg 2-3 times a day or diclofenac, for example, 50 mg twice a day. Paracetamol is also well suited for the treatment of muscle fiber tears between the ribs, although the anti-inflammatory effect is rather low.

Furthermore, a pain reduction should be achieved by applying cooling compresses to the painful area. An ice pack wrapped in a towel can be very helpful here. The cooling should be done 2-3 times a day.

Furthermore, cooling or pain-relieving gels can also be applied to the chest and the affected rib muscles. Here too, the application can take place 2-3 times a day. The so-called taping with Kinesiotape has become more and more popular in recent years for the treatment of general muscle injuries, but also for classic muscle fiber tears.

In the taping procedure, an elastic band is stuck over the torn or torn muscle. This is intended to cushion and dissipate the forces that would otherwise act on the injured muscle. The tape should be applied to the skin without tension.

The skin should be dry and non-greasy so that the tape does not slip. In the area of the chest, different tapes can also be applied. Sometimes it is also necessary to stick the tapes crosswise to achieve a better effect.

The tape can remain on the injured muscles for several days or even weeks. If the symptoms increase, the tape should be removed again. Taping is usually also a complementary treatment method for ruptured muscle fibers between the rib muscles. Depending on the degree of pain, a cooling and pain-relieving treatment should always be performed in parallel. Kinesiotapes are usually used by orthopedists, trauma surgeons or physiotherapists.More information on this topic under: Taping of a torn muscle fiber, Kinesiotape
