Therapy | Pain during tattooing

Therapy

Since the pain when stinging a tattoo is a natural reaction of the body, the affected person usually expects it and they usually subside quickly after the process of tattooing, they almost never need therapy. However, if they are extremely strong and last longer, you can of course take a painkiller, preferably the one that you feel is best for you personally (aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen, among others, are possible). However, if the pain persists for a longer period of time and signs of inflammation or allergy develop, you should consult a doctor and, if necessary, discuss a therapy with him (for example, the use of anti-inflammatory drugs such as cortisone or anti-allergic agents such as antihistamines).

History

The fact that it hurts when the tattoo is pierced is quite normal and therefore no cause for concern (except for people for whom this pain in itself is a cause of concern). Normally, however, the pain lasts only during the process of tattooing and possibly for a short time afterwards, and can therefore be well tolerated by most. Consequential damage is very rare in healthy people.

Reduce pain

The most important rule for pain control is to eat before tattooing to gain energy and increase pain tolerance.A simple way to better cope with the pain is to control your breathing. Similar to pregnant women during childbirth, breathing techniques can reduce the sensation of pain. By quiet deep breathing during the tattooing you relax on the tattoo artist’s chair and the pain is felt as less intense.

A deep inhalation should be followed by an exhalation phase, which is twice as long as the previous inhalation. Through this controlled breathing the heartbeat is decelerated and the muscles relaxed. The effect occurs after the first correctly executed exhalation and increases with each breathing cycle.

Chewing a stress ball or chewing gum also helps to cope better with the pain. In addition, one can relax during the tattooing with music,

There is also a cream that can be used for local anesthesia of the body area. Emla cream contains the anaesthetic active ingredients lidocaine or prilocaine, which anaesthetise the pain sensation and conduction.

Some tattoo artists use this cream, others advise against it, because the cream softens the skin and it becomes more difficult to sting the tattoo. Emla Cream

Many people reach for the homeopathic remedy Arnica and swear by its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and haemostatic effects. Besides the relief of pain, Arnica has the positive side effect that the freshly bitten area swells and heals faster.

However, one should get advice when buying Arnica Globuli, as there are mixtures with different potencies and the potencies should be individually adapted to the person. Taking ibuprofen during the session also relieves the swelling and pain. However, it does not completely erase the pain, ibuprofen only reduces the intensity of the pain.

When taking ibuprofen during a tattooing session, care must be taken to ensure that the maximum daily dose is not exceeded. However, the effectiveness of ibuprofen for pain during tattooing is much discussed. Completely discouraged is the use of Novalgin, especially if you do not know if you can tolerate the drug.

Novalgin often causes strong side effects. It is not advisable to take centrally acting strong painkillers (Tilidin, Valeron), especially since they are only available on prescription and can cause considerable, very serious side effects if they are dosed incorrectly. The pain that everyone feels when tattooing is different. The back covers many areas, which are also differently innervated and individually strengthened with muscles or fat. The intensity of pain increases with the duration of tattooing.

Particularly painful are areas that are strongly innervated, such as the ribs and their spaces and places where the bone is almost directly under the skin. From experience reports, it can be seen that the pain in the back can vary greatly depending on where you get tattooed. In the lower back and lumbar region, the pain is described as very severe, whereas many others report that the shoulder area is less painful. In general, there are many different opinions about the pain intensity of a tattoo on the back, ranging from hardly painful to very painful, and are probably most likely to be due to the personal perception of pain.

Especially when tattooing on the back, it is important to keep the muscles as relaxed as possible to prevent tension pain. Therefore, breathing techniques and meditation exercises are recommended, which distract and relax. With extensive tattoos on the back, it is not advisable to use large areas of numbing ointments.
