Therapy | Pain in case of root canal inflammation

Therapy

In the case of tooth shear caused by an inflammation of the root, the first step should be to see a dentist, as the inflammation must be treated immediately to prevent worse. The dentist will perform a root canal treatment or in some cases an apicoectomy, which quickly leads to pain relief. Even the first incision can cause a weakening, as the inflamed tissue is removed and rinsed with various solutions.

Chlorhexidine (2%) and sodium hypocholride are used as anti-inflammatory agents. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that penetrates the bacterial cell membrane and alters it. Chlorhexidine is also present in mouthwashes and has good mucous membrane adhesion.

Sodium hypocholite is a frequently used disinfectant that is applied to the affected area during root canal treatment and kills the bacteria. To relieve the pain until an appointment is made with the dentist, for example, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used in the case of an inflammation of the tooth root, which can be dosed as required and in consultation with the doctor (please note the package insert, special care is required during pregnancy). Ibuprofen has the advantage that it can influence the development and maintenance of inflammatory processes.

However, taking the medication only relieves the pain for a short period of time, but does not eliminate the cause, so that a longer intake is not advisable. The use of aspirin should be reconsidered as it has an inhibitory effect on the function of the blood platelets and weakens blood clotting. Complications may arise during subsequent treatment by the dentist due to the increased bleeding tendency.

Cooling the affected area is not generally recommended, as some patients may improve and others may deteriorate. This has to be tested and adapted to the change of the pain situation. There are also various home remedies that can provide relief from the pain.

For example, chewing rosemary leaves several times can lead to relief. Another well-known remedy is clove oil, which is applied to the affected area using a cotton swab. Cloves can also be used as an alternative.

Propolis is said to have antibiotic (against bacteria), antiviral (against viruses) and antifungal (against fungi) effects.A tincture of it, mixed with some honey, can be rubbed on the tooth in question and thus relieve the pain. Marigold can also be used, as it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Compresses made of savoy cabbage leaves, onions or chamomile can be applied to the painful area from the outside.

As this pain is the result of an inflammation caused by bacteria, regular visits to the dentist should be mentioned as a prophylactic measure, but also daily care of the mouth, by brushing teeth, flossing, use of mouthwashes etc. This removes plaque and prevents the bacteria from spreading. But also a healthy diet reduces the risk.
