Therapy

A swelling behind the ear, which is caused by enlarged lymph nodes, in the context of a cold, does not need special treatment. Symptomatically, anti-inflammatory drugs (for example ibuprofen, or paracetamol) can be taken. In addition, bed rest and sufficient drinking should be ensured.

In the case of an inflammation of the middle ear, decongestant nasal sprays should always be used and painkillers taken if necessary. Sometimes it may be necessary to take antibiotics. If mastoiditis is present, a clinic should definitely be consulted.

There antibiotics are usually administered, in children often intravenously. Sometimes a surgical intervention may be necessary. If the cause of the swelling behind the ear is a lipoma, an atheroma or a neck cyst, these can be removed surgically. An abscess usually has to be punctured and drained via a drain and treated with antibiotics.
