Therapy | Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)

Therapy

In patients with stable circulation, an attempt can be made to stop the seizures by immersing the face in cold water or by a Valsalva pressing attempt (deep inhalation and then pressing with the mouth closed). If the seizures cannot be stopped, a drug therapy must be started. The drug of choice here is adenosine, which causes a short-term blockage of the AV line.

A recurrence prophylaxis is useful if the tachycardia occurs frequently and cannot be terminated by the patient himself, e.g. by a Valsalva pressing maneuver, and thus the quality of life is significantly reduced by the symptoms. The therapy of choice is catheter ablation of one of the two pathways. If there are additional pathways (Kent bundles), catheter ablation should always be performed.
