Therapy | Vitamin D overdose

Therapy

If there is a well-founded suspicion of vitamin D overdose or even a safe diagnosis, one should become active. Those affected should first consult their family doctor to have the level of vitamin D and its precursors measured in their blood. This is known as mirror determination.

If the suspicion of an oversupply of vitamin D is confirmed, the dose of the preparation previously taken should be reduced or even completely discontinued. As a rule, a balanced diet with tuna or cod liver oil and regular exercise in the fresh air (and thus in sunlight) is perfectly adequate for a normal vitamin D level in healthy adults. Exceptions to this rule are small children under one year of age and old people.

The latter in particular naturally produce only small amounts of vitamin D and, in addition, are often no longer outdoors enough due to other illnesses. In these cases, vitamin D prophylaxis should nevertheless be discussed with a doctor. The doctor will also determine an individual daily dose during the examination and recommend an appropriate preparation.

These control measures counteract unpleasant side effects of the therapy. In order to be able to give recommendations for pregnant women regarding Vitamin D food addition or the danger of an overdose, the present study situation is unfortunately too inconsistent: While some studies describe a supplied Vitamin D admission in the form of food addition as protecting for nut/mother and child, other studies show that high Vitamin D mirror of the nut/mother increases the later allergy risk of the child under circumstances. Due to the uncertain data situation, gynaecologists recommend pregnant women to avoid additional supplements or to have regular blood count and vitamin level controls carried out in consultation with the doctor in charge. In principle, the standard recommendation for pregnant women is to eat a healthy diet and take regular exercise outdoors to get enough sunlight. Under these conditions, no vitamin D deficiency is to be expected and supplements are not necessary.
