TherapyPhysiotherapy

The therapy of a tendinitis calcarea can be carried out in different ways. Basically, a distinction must be made between conservative and surgical treatment methods. After the diagnosis is made, conservative therapies are initially used to attempt to provide acute and permanent relief.

This is done on the one hand by taking pain and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well as by physiotherapy and physiotherapy exercises. Certain types of sport can also help to alleviate the symptoms, if performed correctly. Swimming in particular can help to reduce the pain typically associated with the disease.

Physiotherapeutic treatment includes massages and exercises as well as the possibility of shock wave therapy. If conservative therapeutic approaches have not been able to achieve the desired result, surgical removal of the calcific deposits can help to alleviate the symptoms that occur in the course of tendinitis. The removal can be carried out either by means of arthroscopy or a special syringe.

Which option is appropriate in each individual case should be discussed with the doctor in charge. Among other therapies, the so-called shock wave therapy can also help to alleviate the symptoms of tendinitis calcarea. Shock wave therapy is offered by some physiotherapists as well as by certain orthopaedic surgeons.

During the therapy certain waves are generated which are similar to sound waves. The energy of these waves can be used to break down the calcium deposits in the tendons and break them into such small pieces that the body can break them down. The frequency and strength of the shock waves can be manually adjusted by the therapist to the individual calcium deposits.

The shock wave therapy is performed without anaesthesia, but can be somewhat painful, especially at the beginning of the therapy. A treatment lasts only a few minutes and usually requires several sessions. It should be noted that shock wave therapy is usually not covered by health insurance companies. One session can be between 50 and 350€.
