TherapyWhat to do?

The treatment of stomach pain and nausea is as varied as the various causes. What to do for stomach pain and nausea depends very much on the particular disease:

  • If the stomach pain and nausea are due to pregnancy, you should avoid food and smells that cause nausea. In extreme cases, medicines with the active ingredient pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and antihistamine can help.

In most cases, however, the morning sickness usually disappears after a few weeks or can be reduced to tolerable levels through a certain diet.

  • In the case of a stomach ulcer (ulcer) or inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach (gastritis), it helps to reduce irritating substances such as alcohol or too much fatty meat.In addition, there are drugs that are gentle on the stomach and help to build up a protective environment in the stomach and thus protect the stomach lining (for example, so-called proton inhibitors).
  • In the case of gastric cancer, additional surgery is required, as is pancreatic cancer, although life expectancy in the latter is extremely short.
  • If the stomach pain and nausea are due to irritable bowel syndrome, the only thing that helps is to eat more consciously and avoid stress.
  • With a gastrointestinal infection it depends on whether a bacterium or a virus is responsible for the complaints. In the case of an infestation by bacteria, an antibiotic can often get the disease under control quickly. Since viruses do not react to antibiotics, treatment here is more difficult and the therapy must be limited for the time being to give the patient enough water to avoid dehydration and possibly resort to home remedies to treat stomach pain.

Bananas or rusks are foods that are usually good to eat. Also aniseed or fennel tea often help to calm the stomach. Nux vomica is homeopathically recommended.

There are many medicines for stomach pain with nausea, but there are different specific preparations for the different causes of the complaints.

One drug that helps against both stomach pain and nausea are the so-called dopamine antagonists such as the well-known metoclopramide (MCP). One of the effects of metoclopramide is to relieve nausea through certain effects in the brain. It also leads to increased forward movement of the intestine.

This forward movement of the intestine leads to a faster transport of the “culprit” through the gastrointestinal tract in the case of a gastrointestinal flu. Since the stomach pain ends as soon as the pathogen or the spoiled food has passed through the stomach, the rapid forward movement thus also leads to rapid relief of the symptoms. Medications such as scopolamine or butylscopolamine (e.g. Buscopan®) are effective against cramp-like stomach pain and nausea.

Since these can only relieve cramps in the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, drugs containing this active ingredient are not effective for stomach pain that is not caused by cramps in the muscles. If stomach pain and nausea are due to inflammation of the stomach lining, proton pump inhibitors such as Omeprazole or Pantozol® relieve the symptoms, as they considerably reduce the amount of gastric acid in the stomach, which is the cause of the symptoms. Under no circumstances should painkillers such as ASS, ibuprofen or diclofenac be taken for stomach pain and nausea, as these can cause inflammation of the stomach lining as side effects and can thus even increase the symptoms.

Home remedies can also be used to relieve stomach pain with nausea. Herbal teas can often help to calm the irritated stomach a little and relieve the cramps that cause the enormous pain. Soothing and anti-inflammatory chamomile is suitable, as is peppermint.

If stomach pain with nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea is added to the symptoms, large quantities of this should be drunk to compensate for the loss of fluid due to vomiting or diarrhoea and to prevent the body from drying out. From the outside, heat can help to relieve the stomach pain, as heat relaxes the muscles. A hot-water bottle, a cherry stone pillow or a warm bath are suitable for this purpose.
