This is the best way to solve muscle hardenings!

Muscle hardening can, in principle, affect any muscle in the body. Mostly they manifest themselves in the muscles that are frequently stressed. Runners often have to deal with hardening of the leg muscles, while more arm-heavy sports also have hardening in the shoulder and arm muscles. Most hardenings are short-lived and can be treated well with home remedies, heat/cold, ointments, oils and massages.

Muscle hardening usually results in increased tension of the musculature. Often the muscle lacks certain electrolytes or other substances that contribute to a slackening of the individual muscle fibers. Against this hardening of the muscle a light and careful stretching can be helpful.

It is important not to stretch with all your might against the tension. Instead, a slowly increasing stretching of the hardened muscle should be done with careful movements. If necessary, the stretching can be combined with heat applications or oils and ointments.

Simple short muscle hardenings usually do not need to be treated with medication. The administration of electrolytes such as magnesium is usually more helpful. However, if there is persistent hardening of the muscles, various drugs can be used.

A typical example is the injection of local anesthetics under the skin for wheals. Deeper infiltrations with local anesthetics can also be performed. In addition, it is sometimes useful to take pain medication locally (usually with an ointment) or systemically (as tablets).

All kinds of ointments are used for muscle hardening.

  • Warming ointments, for example, are helpful to stimulate the blood circulation. A
  • Uch ointments containing essential oils can be used.

They promote relaxation in the whole body and thus help to loosen muscle hardening.

  • Pain ointments such as Voltaren® or DocSalbe® can also be used if muscle hardening causes pain.

Voltaren Emulgel® is a pain gel that can be applied to the skin. It is used not only for injuries but also for muscle hardening. Due to its pain-inhibiting effect, it reduces the tension in the muscle and can thus loosen the hardening somewhat.

Voltaren also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Finalgon® is a cream whose ingredient is extracted from cayenne pepper. When applied to the skin, it becomes very warm within a very short time.

The blood circulation of the creamed skin area increases strongly within a very short time. As a result, the active ingredient quickly reaches deeper layers and can thus also unfold its effect in the muscles. Due to the extremely improved blood circulation of the hardened muscle, it is again better supplied with nutrients.

Some of these nutrients are necessary to ensure sufficient relaxation of the individual muscle fibers. Home remedies for hardened muscles can be based on different mechanisms of action. First of all, the application of heat to hardened muscle areas helps most people.

A hot-water bottle or a cherry stone cushion can be used for this purpose. Sometimes, however, cold is also helpful. Suitable household remedies for this are for example

  • Cabbage or quark wraps.
  • Cold and hot baths of the affected body part can also be helpful, as well as alternating baths.

These particularly stimulate the blood circulation and thus help the body to release tension quickly.

  • Other blood circulation-promoting measures are for example massage or warming creams.
  • The Fascial Roll or Blackroll can also be used to loosen muscle hardening. In addition to a strong massage of the muscles, the fasciae surrounding the muscles are stimulated. Possible adhesions loosen and the muscles can move more freely again in their sheath.

Heat application is one of the most frequently used therapeutic means for muscle hardening.

The heat allows the muscles to relax, the blood circulation and metabolism are stimulated and thus the tension or hardening is released more quickly. An application of heat in the form of a warm full-body bath can relax not only the muscles but also the body and mind. Ideally, essential oils are added, which promote relaxation of the muscles and also contribute to mental relaxation through their fragrance.

In this way, the pain can be contained by the cold, as can the body’s initial inflammatory reactions. Cold is also useful for hardened muscles if the person concerned finds it pleasant. In most cases, however, warmth does the muscle hardening better.

However, it is also possible to combine heat and cold, for example in an alternating bath, and thus particularly stimulate the blood circulation of the hardened muscles. This is the best way to strengthen the self-healing powers of the body. Homeopathy is mostly used in the form of essential oils for muscle tension.

Rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil, for example, are particularly good against hardened muscles. They can be used during a massage or applied directly to the skin. Through the pores the ingredients penetrate directly into the skin and reach the hardened muscles.

Essential oils also do well in a warm bath. Thus, the muscles can relax twice as much by means of heat and homeopathy. Kinesiotape is a very elastic tape, which can be used especially for recurring or persistent muscle hardenings.

It is applied to the skin over the affected muscle in such a way that it follows the direction of the muscle’s pull. The tape supports the movement of the muscle through the additional tension on the skin, thus reducing the actual force that the muscle has to exert. Depending on the color, the tapes also have a cooling or warming effect.

The Blackroll is used for fascial therapy and is shaped differently depending on the localization of the muscle hardening. For example, the back muscles are better reached with a dumbbell-like structure, while the classic roll is more suitable for the thigh. During application, the Blackroll is placed on the floor or pressed against the wall.

With the hardened part of the body you now roll over the Blackroll. The strong punctual pressure loosens especially the fasciae. They are often the reason why muscles harden.

Fasciae form an additional connective tissue-like connection between muscles, tendons, bones and joints. They often form a shell around the muscles so that they can move better. However, the muscle may stick in its fascia or the fascia themselves may stick together.

These adhesions can be removed by means of fascial therapy. In this case, the fascia can be treated with a fascia roll such as the Blackroll. Massage techniques can also represent a fascia therapy.

Magnesium is needed in the muscles so that muscle fibers that have contracted can relax again. Therefore, the magnesium balance plays an essential role in the development and treatment of muscle hardening. A magnesium level that is too low favors the development of muscle hardening because the individual muscle fibers cannot separate from each other.

In acute cramps, magnesium is an effective therapy in addition to stretching the muscles. In order to prevent muscle hardening, one should therefore consume sufficient magnesium from nuts, seeds and whole grain products, for example. Acupuncture originates from traditional Chinese medicine.

According to its teachings, energy flows in the body through various veins. Acupuncture can be used to reach certain points on these veins, so that, for example, hardened muscles can be released. Acupuncture is used particularly frequently for chronic back pain caused by muscle tension.

The acupuncture needles do not necessarily have to be inserted into the back, they can also take effect from other parts of the body. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation = stimulation of the nerves with electrical impulses through the skin) or stimulation current treatment can also loosen muscle hardenings. The muscles receive their instructions for tensing and relaxing via nerve fibers that communicate with each other by means of electrical signals.Through TENS or stimulation current treatment you can intervene in this communication from the outside and thus loosen muscle hardenings.
