Thorn Massage

The Dorn Method is a massage technique that was developed in the 1970s by Dieter Dorn, a farmer from the Allgäu region of Germany, after he himself had been put right by a villager friend due to lumbago. The Dorn Massage is used to treat people with spinal problems and joint pain and the accompanying symptoms such as numbness, tingling and muscle weakness. Basically, the Dorn Method is more a help to self-help.

Malpositions of the spinal column are gently corrected by the therapist through controlled movements of the patient, so that pain is relieved and the permanent development of postural defects is prevented. The Dorn Method takes a holistic view of the body, meaning the body and the relationships between the vertebrae, the energy lines of the body and the psyche are brought into connection. A typical treatment normally takes about 1 hour, because due to the complex interrelationships of the individual vertebral bodies with the body, the spine is always treated as a whole.

As a rule, 2-4 sessions are necessary to ensure that patients are free of complaints again. This is because long periods of incorrect posture cause the muscles and surrounding tissues to become accustomed to the wrong posture and then, seen in this light, it is necessary to get used to the correct posture again. The Dorn Massage is suitable for both acute and chronic illnesses. However, it should always be performed by a trained therapist. A frequent combination is the Dorn and Breuss massage, whereby the Breuss massage serves as a relaxing pre or post treatment.

Procedure

If a patient comes to the practice with the desire for a Dorn Massage, it is first necessary to find out the reasons for his decision in order to decide whether a therapy is reasonable. Part of the anamnesis is also an assessment of the body and any existing malpositions. If the Dorn Massage is evaluated as a sensible therapy measure, the treatment can be started.

The patient and the therapist move into a separate, quiet room, where work can be carried out undisturbed. In the course of the treatment, the therapist systematically goes through the individual joints and vertebral bodies and treats and corrects them with the help of the patient. Afterwards the therapist explains some exercises that the patient can perform at home.

The Breuss massage can be used to introduce or conclude a Dorn massage to provide the patient with additional relaxation and regeneration. Usually 2-4 sessions are necessary to achieve the desired results. Osteopathy for arthrosis and osteopathy for a herniated disc
