Throat pain-What to do?

Introduction

What can be done about laryngeal pain always depends on the cause of the pain. Often the pain is caused by a viral inflammation or irritation from dry air or airborne pollutants. As a rule, laryngeal pain does not need to be treated by a doctor, as the causes are usually harmless.

Home remedies

So what can you do at home to relieve the unpleasant pain? The most important measure is to reduce speaking to a minimum so as not to irritate the larynx even further. If there are complaints in the throat, patients often whisper to supposedly spare the voice, but this is even more harmful than normal speaking and should therefore be avoided at all costs.

Substances that irritate the respiratory tract, and therefore the larynx even more, should also be avoided. These include above all alcohol and tobacco smoke, but also dry and dusty air. Besides dry air, which is often present in air-conditioned rooms, air that is too cold or too warm should also be avoided.

By placing damp cloths on the heater or small water containers on the windowsill, the humidity in the room can be increased, thus counteracting the dryness of the larynx. The pain in the larynx is often caused by a too dry larynx, so the larynx should be kept moist by drinking plenty of water. In addition, moist and hot compresses can also be applied to the neck.

Furthermore, one can actively do something against the larynx pain by means of a steam inhalation. You can use special inhalation mixtures of different herbs such as peppermint, sage, chamomile and eucalyptus or simply salt water, which can be purchased for example in the pharmacy. Alternatively, you can also use various essential oils for inhalation, which have a soothing effect on the mucous membrane. Besides inhalation, these substances can also be supplied in the form of sweets or teas. Like the measures already described, sweets moisturize the respiratory tract, but additionally provide a useful increase in saliva production.
