Thymol

Products

Thymol, in combination with other essential oils, is found as an ointment, solution, and oil, among other products, mainly in cold remedies (e.g., Vicks VapoRub). As a veterinary medicine, it is available in the form of vaporizing tablets and as a gel.

Structure and properties

Thymol (C10H14O, Mr = 150.2 g/mol) is present as colorless crystals that are very slightly soluble in water and very slightly soluble in ethanol 96%. Thymol can also be readily dissolved in essential or fatty oils. It is a natural constituent of thyme essential oil from thyme.

Effects

Thymol (ATCvet QP53AX22) has antiseptic, skin irritant, expectorant, and acaricidal properties against varroa mites in bees.

Indications

  • Thymol is found in cold remedies used to treat colds, sinusitis, and coughs, among other conditions.
  • As a veterinary medicine, the active ingredient is used against varroa mites in honey bees.
