The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by tinnitus (ringing in the ears):
External causes of morbidity and mortality (V01-Y84).
- Suicidality (suicidal tendency) or suicide (suicide).
- Suicides: highest prevalence of suicides (one-third) occurred in 1st year of tinnitus:
- 85% had additional hearing loss,
- About two-thirds had a “major depression” in the course.
- One third had a mental illness preceded the tinnitus (alcohol abuse (alcohol dependence), anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorder, schizophrenia)

- Hearing loss
Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression (in patients with decompensated tinnitus).
- Insomnia (sleep disturbances; esp. difficulty falling asleep).
