Toenail no longer grows

Behind the fact that a toenail no longer grows, there are various mechanisms. On the one hand, a severe injury of the toenail bed, for example by a bruise or falling of a massive object, can lead to an irreversible impairment of the nail root. The new formation of a toenail is then altered in such a way that the nail no longer seems to grow noticeably in length, but rather in height.

As long as there are no further complaints, such as pain, this situation is rather unproblematic, whereby a clarification by a doctor would be recommended. On the other hand, infections, such as a nail fungus, can attack the toenail and then change the nail structure in such a way that the nail, similar to the nail injury, no longer grows but becomes thicker. In addition, the nail loses strength and becomes brittle, which means that even if the toenail grows, the front part always breaks off. The difference here is, however, that by an adapted treatment of the toenail, a normal growth can be made possible again. Again, it makes sense to consult a doctor to have the infection of the toenail treated.
