Tolu Balsam

Products

Tolu balsam is available in pharmacies and drugstores. In many countries, the most famous product containing tolu balsam is Zeller Balsam. It is also contained in the Zeller Balsam ointment.

Structure and properties

Tolu balsam is a resin balsam obtained from the stem of the tolu balsam tree Harms var. of the legume family (Fabaceae). The tree is native to South America. The pharmacopoeia requires a minimum acid content, calculated as cinnamic acid. Tolu balsam exists as a hard, brittle, brownish to reddish-brown mass and has an odor reminiscent of vanillin. It is practically insoluble in water. Extracts are made from tolu balsam, for example, with ethanol. A tolu balsam syrup (Balsami tolutani sirupus PH) is monographed in the Swiss pharmacopoeia. Ingredients include organic acids such as cinnamic acid and benzoic acid, as well as their esters and essential oil.
