A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:
- General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
- Inspection (viewing) of oral cavity (especially oropharynx/mouth) [acute tonsillitis: inflammation limited to palatine tonsils].
- Skin and mucous membranes
- Examination of the nasopharynx by epipharyngoscopy (nasopharyngoscopy).
- [acute tonsillitis:
- Recurrent (acute) tonsillitis (RAT): lack of luxation of the tonsil (due toScarring trains with the peritonsillar tissue).
- Peritonsillar abscess:
- Unilateral (unilateral) markedly swollen tonsil + surrounding redness and swelling of the soft palate.
- Tonsillar exudate
- Deviation of the uvula (uvula) to the opposite side]
- Examination of the ears by otoscope / otoscopy [due topossible secondary disease: otitis media (otitis media)].
- Palpation (palpation) of the cervical and nuchal (“belonging to the neck and neck”) lymph nodes [pronounced lymph node enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes].
- Auscultation (listening) of the heart [due topossible secondary diseases: Endocarditis (meningitis, usually the heart valves are affected), myocarditis (myocarditis), pericarditis (pericardial inflammation)]
- Inspection (viewing) of oral cavity (especially oropharynx/mouth) [acute tonsillitis: inflammation limited to palatine tonsils].
- If necessary, ENT medical examination
Square brackets [ ] indicate possible pathological (pathological) physical findings.
