Tooth jewelry

Tooth jewelry is any kind of decoration such as tartar, glued diamonds or so-called Dazzler. They are a fad and can already be seen on some celebrities. The selection of motifs for tooth jewelry is very large.

There are foils of gold, they are called Dazzler or gold plates with incorporated gems called Twinkles. There are almost no limits to the imagination. If you want to spend a lot of money, you can also resort to diamonds.

To be able to be attached to the smooth surface of the teeth, they must be flat on the underside. With diamonds, the underside is also polished smooth. After the tooth has been carefully cleaned, the enamel is etched with acid – for better adhesion – and the tooth jewelry is glued on with light-curing composite. After removing the excess adhesive, the enamel is treated with fluoride to remove any etching damage. As the foils are very thin, they do not disturb while eating.

However, the durability of the tooth jewelry is limited. However, it can last several years. If the tooth jewelry is to be removed earlier, this is possible without any problems.

A fluoride treatment is necessary, however. Due to the irregular surface of the tooth jewelry, bacterial plaque can easily accumulate on the tooth jewelry. These represent a certain risk for the spread of caries.

For this reason, the wearer of dental jewelry must perform particularly careful oral hygiene. Please refer to our topics Dental Care and Professional Tooth Cleaning. The costs consist of the material and the fixing by the dentist.

They vary of course, depending on whether gold foil, platinum foil or diamonds are used. The lower limit should be at least about 100 €. There is no reimbursement from the health insurance companies, as this is a purely aesthetic measure.

There are also other types of jewelry in the oral cavity. Plugs are attached through the tongue as piercing or through the gums in the interdental space or rings are pulled through the lips. In contrast to tooth jewelry, these procedures are painful and not without danger.

Since tissue is injured, infections can occur. Therefore it is necessary to operate with as little germs as possible. Unfortunately, absolute sterility is not possible in the oral cavity.

Certain metals can also cause allergies. Also the piercings interfere with speech and eating. The tooth jewelry is a supplement of other jewelry variants.

It is glued with composite to the surface of the front teeth. Different motives made of gold foil or other materials are used. The most valuable are diamonds.

It is possible to remove them at any time. Tooth jewelry requires special care to prevent caries. The costs are not reimbursed by health insurance companies.
