Torn corner of the mouth during pregnancy

During pregnancy the body undergoes extreme hormonal changes. This change can lead to various reactions in the body. Among other things, many pregnant women are affected by torn corners of the mouth, which suddenly become more frequent during pregnancy.

The cause is usually a lack of various vitamins, minerals and especially a reduced supply of the trace element iron (anemia). Iron keeps the hair, nails and skin healthy. Especially during pregnancy, the body needs twice as much iron as usual.

To prevent cracking, the lips should be regularly moisturized. Various care products such as lip balm, which can be bought in drugstores or pharmacies, are suitable for this. In addition, the iron content can be determined during pregnancy by means of a blood test.

If the treating physician determines an iron deficiency, the patient can be prescribed various medications to rebuild the body’s iron stores. In some extreme cases, the administration of iron may also be necessary intravenously via an infusion. In general, these drugs are safe and well tolerated during pregnancy.

Lacerations of the corners of the mouth in small children are often caused by a bacterial infection with streptococci or staphylococci. They often carry many objects to the mouth and are not aware of the carry-over of bacteria and viruses. The tears are promoted by frequent licking of already sore skin areas.

The skin can also be irritated by the excessive administration of sweet drinks such as apple juice or spritzer. This should then be avoided during an acute inflammation. For children and toddlers, torn corners of the mouth can be very unpleasant, as they discover a lot with their mouth during their development phase and move it accordingly.

In order to keep children free of symptoms and to keep the skin smooth and soft, ointments can help very well. Zinc ointment, Bepanthen wound- and healing ointment or lip-healing cream like Blistex can be applied especially well in the evening before sleeping on the irritated skin areas. For children, it is recommended to ensure a sufficient fluid intake, in the best case with water. A balanced diet with sufficient vitamins, minerals and trace elements can also prevent or accelerate the healing process.
