Treatment | Cystitis in the baby

Treatment

A bladder infection in a baby should always be taken seriously and a doctor should be consulted. There is a danger that the germs can rise up to the kidneys and cause a renal pelvic inflammation here. The treatment of cystitis in babies is carried out with an antibiotic from the group of cephalosporins, e.g. Ceftriaxone.

In many cases the treatment is carried out as an in-patient, as the administration of antibiotics as well as the administration of fluids can be carried out well via the vein. The antibiotic is usually administered over 7-14 days. In addition to the antibiotic therapy, a fever reduction with paracetamol and ibuprofen can be given. Care should also be taken to ensure an adequate fluid intake. If the child is still being breastfed and still drinks normal amounts, this is sufficient.

Duration / Forecast

If the cystitis is detected and treated with an antibiotic in time, the prognosis is very good. The cystitis heals without consequences within a few days. If detected late, the bacteria can rise with a resulting inflammation of the renal pelvis or, in the worst case, blood poisoning (urosepsis).
