Treatment | Diarrhea after coffee

Treatment

The problem of diarrhea and the possible accompanying symptoms after drinking coffee can be tackled in different ways. First, however, one should be sure that the symptoms are caused by the coffee and not, for example, by the milk added. You can try this simply by omitting the milk or even the coffee.

The simplest therapy is, of course, also to avoid coffee. If there is no caffeine, it cannot cause the known problems. You can also make sure to drink coffee in smaller quantities.

This will weaken the body’s response and possibly prevent diarrhoea. Since the body’s response also varies from person to person, you can find out the amount you can tolerate by trying it out. Furthermore, it is recommended not to drink coffee in the morning on an empty stomach, as the susceptibility is particularly high in this case.

You can also try other types of coffee. Different ingredients and roasting processes can make a difference. Especially espresso or drinks like cappuccino, in which espresso is processed, are a frequently used alternative. Finally, the coffee should be boiled with sufficient hot water or replaced with decaffeinated coffee.

Duration and prognosis

The duration of diarrhea after drinking coffee is usually relatively short and rarely exceeds 30 minutes. The prognosis is also favorable, as there is no risk of recurrence once the caffeine effect has subsided. However, the body’s reaction to coffee or caffeine remains relatively constant with increasing age, which is why the prognosis of improvement is rather poor and the symptoms often occur throughout the entire life.
