Treatment duration | Tooth crown

Treatment duration

Prosthetic dental treatment takes time, because several things have to be clarified in advance and the crown has to be made in the dental laboratory. Before the crown is made, the dentist will take an x-ray (dental film) of the tooth and examine the condition of the roots. In some cases it is recommended to perform a root canal treatment, because the inflammation of the dental nerves may make it necessary to remove the crown afterwards. Afterwards the tooth is ground so that the later crown can be fixed without problems. After the laboratory has finished its work, the dentist removes the temporary restoration and removes residues of the adhesive cement. The new crown can be inserted and bonded immediately afterwards.

Durability

The durability of a dental crown depends on the one hand on the selected material and on the other hand on the dental (or crown) care of the patient. Especially the gumline should be cleaned and cared for carefully. Under ideal conditions, all-cast and galvanic crowns can remain in the oral cavity for between 15 and 25 years. All-ceramic crowns usually last up to 15 years on the treated tooth. Crowns made of plastic, on the other hand, are extremely susceptible to dirt and have a durability of only five to seven years.

Costs

The treatment of a decayed tooth with a crown is usually not completely covered by the statutory health insurance companies, they only pay a fixed allowance. This fixed allowance can be increased, for example, by regular control visits and the keeping of a bonus booklet. The patient has to pay the remaining costs out of his or her own pocket, the exact amount depends on the material used.

All-cast crowns cost on average between 90 and 130 euros per tooth. Veneer crowns are somewhat more expensive with costs of 230 to 350 Euro per tooth. If the patient chooses to have an all-ceramic crown, between 280 and 450 euros per tooth will be charged.
