Treatment | Hip inflammation in children

Treatment

The treatment of hip inflammation in children and infants always depends on the underlying underlying disease and the described symptoms. Thus, the correct diagnosis of the cause responsible for the complaints and the hip inflammation is necessary to initiate a therapy. For this reason, a visit to a pediatrician is always recommended if hip complaints are noticeable in a child or toddler.

Inflammations of the hip joint, which cannot be traced back to a bacterial or viral cause, usually heal after a few days. The symptoms of an existing hip rhinitis (Coxitis fugax) should improve significantly after 6-10 days, even without therapy. In addition, anti-inflammatory drugs can be taken, which can also treat the inflammation well.

In order not to strain the joint, it is advisable in most cases to spare the hip. However, this should normally not exceed a few days in order not to risk the occurrence of side effects of restricted movement. The pain that occurs during the course of the disease can be relieved with an adapted pain medication, if necessary.

If the symptoms do not improve, further diagnostics should be carried out in order not to overlook other diseases that may be the cause of the symptoms. Inflammations of the hip, in which bacterial pathogens are the cause, are usually treated with antibiotically effective medication. Accompanying symptoms such as fever and pain can also be treated with drug therapy. In some cases, surgical intervention is necessary to ensure healing of the inflammation.

Bacterial inflammation of the hip joint should be taken very seriously, as the occurrence of complications can lead to permanent damage to the structures involved in the joint. Inflammations of the hip joint, which represent a wear and tear disease, are rather rare in children. Nevertheless, in the context of a so-called Perthes disease, children can also develop a condition in which parts of the bone involved in the hip joint are damaged. Physiotherapeutic exercises and therapies as well as wearing special medical aids with the aim of healing the bone destruction are the therapeutic basis of the disease. In advanced stages of the disease, surgical interventions can help to achieve a healing of the disease.
