Treatment | Lymphangitis after an insect bite

Treatment

It is not possible to make a generally valid prognosis or statement about the duration of lymphangitis. The conditions of the affected persons can be too different. The better the body’s own defense system, the better the prognosis and the shorter the duration of the disease.

In addition, the time at which antibiotic therapy is started is also decisive. If it is noticed that the immune system is not able to cope with the inflammation, every hour earlier in hospital is associated with a slightly better prognosis. Nevertheless, lymphangitis in Germany today is no longer a disease associated with death. Only in very rare and serious cases can death occur from lymphangitis via sepsis.

Course of disease

Similar to prognosis and duration, the course of the disease depends on many different factors. As a rule, lymphangitis heals without consequences by the use of antibiotics. In some cases, however, the lymph vessels can become blocked after the inflammation, which can result in lymph congestion. Only in very few cases do lymphangitis result in serious impairment or even death, even if the disease is still known under the pseudonym blood poisoning.
