Treatment of diarrhea after a vaccination in the baby

As a rule, diarrhea occurring as a side effect after a vaccination does not require special treatment. However, it is important – especially for babies – that sufficient fluid intake is ensured. Fluid is lost with every case of diarrhoea.

Especially in babies who are not yet able to compensate for such a loss of fluid, there is therefore a risk of dehydration (dehydration) if diarrhoea occurs frequently. If there is the impression that the babies cannot take in enough fluid, the treating pediatrician should be consulted. He can then decide whether there is a risk of dehydration.

In such a case, inpatient treatment may be necessary. During this treatment, fluid is substituted via the vein. If there is diarrhea, even more than usual, regular diaper changes should be ensured. Otherwise, diarrhoea-related skin irritations in the diaper area can lead to rashes (diaper dermatitis) or even fungal infections (diaper sores), which must be treated with a fungal ointment.
