Treatment of muscle twitching

The treatment of involuntary muscle twitches depends on their cause. In most cases, stress or emotional strain is the trigger for the muscle twitch. Therefore, the muscle twitching usually disappears by itself without treatment.

It also helps to learn ways of coping with stress, such as autogenic training. Behavioral therapy can also be useful for dealing with emotionally stressful situations. If a magnesium deficiency is the cause of the muscle twitching, one should first try to increase the magnesium intake in the diet.

Magnesium can also be supplied in tablets or powder form. Here too, muscle twitching usually improves after a short time. If the muscle twitching is caused by serious illnesses, these must be treated.

In most cases, the neurologist is the first point of contact. If a herniated disc is suspected, it is advisable to consult an orthopedist. However, in most cases, the muscle twitching disappears of its own accord even without therapy.

In addition to stress and psychological strain factors, a magnesium deficiency is a frequent trigger for muscle twitching. A magnesium deficiency can occur especially in people with an increased magnesium requirement, e.g. athletes or pregnant women. In these cases, one should first try to increase the magnesium intake in the diet.

Pulses such as beans, chickpeas or lentils are rich in magnesium. This also applies to sesame, pumpkin seeds or poppy seeds. Last but not least, bananas also contain a lot of magnesium.

In addition, magnesium can always be taken in the form of dietary supplements as tablets or in powder form. Although the benefits have not been clearly proven, it is certainly possible to give it a try. Limptar is a well-known drug that is used for muscle cramps or muscle twitching.

In the meantime, however, the drug is no longer available over the counter in pharmacies, but must be prescribed on a prescription. The reason is that in the past there have been serious side effects such as cardiac arrhythmias, blood count changes as well as visual and hearing disorders. The drug contains the active ingredient quinine. This relaxes the muscles. However, due to the side effect profile, it should only be taken after consulting a doctor.
