Treatment | Prader-Willi syndrome

Treatment

The Prader-Willi syndrome is not curable. The focus of symptomatic therapy is primarily on a strict diet. In this context, strict calorie restriction as well as a sufficient supply of vitamins and other nutrients must be ensured in order to prevent overweight and promote healthy development.

Physiotherapy can help to promote the motor development of the children. The administration of growth hormones can be started early. This should be done under strict supervision as the therapy can also have side effects, e.g. foot edema or a worsening of an existing scoliosis. Sex hormones can be replaced at the beginning of puberty. Psychotherapy in the form of behavioral therapy can be used and special care should be taken in school to promote social development.

Duration and prognosis

The Prader-Willi syndrome is not curable. However, its severity can be reduced by early therapy. If the overweight can be controlled by a strict diet, a normal life expectancy can be assumed.

Severe secondary diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases can be prevented. However, those affected remain infertile for a lifetime and have an increased susceptibility to infections.
