Treatment/Therapy | Pain in the back of the heel

Treatment/Therapy

The treatment of heel pain depends on the cause of the pain. In most cases, this means changing shoes, orthopedic insoles or taking care of the heel in everyday life. In case of a Haglund’s heel, heel spur, pressure points or an anatomically deviating foot position, perfectly fitted shoes or orthopedic insoles are indispensable.

The anatomy and gait pattern of the patient is examined in order to counteract the corresponding weak points with the future shoes. In the case of Achilles tendonitis irritation, apophysitis calcanei or heel spur, it is often sufficient to rest the foot for a few weeks. Above all, stressful sports or long walks should be avoided. Simultaneous cooling of the heel can also relieve pain. Only in rare cases, for example in the case of a torn Achilles tendon, may surgical therapy be necessary.

Duration

The duration of the pain depends on many factors and therefore varies between a few days and a chronic (persistent) course. If the cause is overstrain, the pain will usually improve after a few days or weeks if the patient is not stressed. Often, however, in addition to daily stress, the wearing of unsuitable footwear is also to blame.

In this case, the pain will not stop until a change has been made. Rarely do genetic factors cause the pain. These have existed since childhood and can only improve through appropriate therapy and can therefore last for a very long time.
