Treatment/Therapy | Pus on the tonsils

Treatment/Therapy

If the tonsils are inflamed and festered, it is a bacterial purulent tonsillitis. If this suspicion is confirmed by the examination of the physician and if streptococci, for example, are detected, then antibiotics must be used against these bacteria. Penicillin V or cephalosporins are primarily used for this.

It is important to fight the bacterial infection so that possible secondary diseases, such as rheumatic fever, can be prevented. If the inflammation is not properly treated and cured, it can develop into chronic tonsillitis. This in turn can lead to inflammation of the kidneys, heart and joints.

In order for the medication to work properly, it is important to take it strictly according to the doctor’s instructions. Also the duration of the taking is very important, if the doctor has ordered a certain period of time and the inflammation has already gone back, one should take the antibiotics nevertheless further. This is the only way to ensure the absolute killing of all bacteria.

If one suffers from fever due to the infection, bed rest and a sufficient fluid intake is important to compensate for the loss of water through sweating. If the patient suffers from recurrent tonsillitis or swelling to such an extent that even breathing is impaired, the tonsils must in many cases be surgically removed. In the so-called tonsillectomy, both palatal tonsils are completely removed.

In another variant, the tonsillectomy, only parts of the palatal tonsils are removed and the capsule of the almond remains. This operation is mainly used in children and has a lower risk of postoperative bleeding. However, nowadays it is performed less frequently than tonsillectomy. If an operation is not absolutely necessary, it should be avoided if possible, as the tonsils are important for the defence against pathogens in the throat.

Homeopathy

In the case of tonsillitis, the use of Aconitum napellus C9 is initially recommended to treat sore throat (five globules every hour). If swallowing difficulties and fever are also experienced, Belladonna C9 can be used instead (again five globules per hour). If the tonsils are also severely reddened and covered with pus, Mercurius corrosivus C30 promises relief.

In the case of chronic tonsillitis, potassium muriaticum C9 should be used (five globules twice a day). There are many other remedies (Eucalyptus, Marum verum, Phytolacca, Calcium iodatum, Arum triphyllum, etc. ), all of which are adapted to different forms of the disease and should be selected individually.

In addition one can read the respective descriptions of the remedies. However, homeopathy should be used with caution, as there is no proper evidence of its effects. Homeopathic treatment should never replace a visit to the doctor, especially in cases of fever and sore throat that last longer than three days.
