Treatment

The treatment of myopia is done with the help of glasses. Minus glasses are used for this. The glasses should be adjusted by an ophthalmologist.

With minus lenses, vision at a distance becomes worse and worse. Therefore, glasses should never overcorrect vision so that the eye has a chance to work on its own. It is possible that in the case of myopia, wearing glasses is necessary for life.

Hyperopia is also corrected with glasses. Plus lenses are used here. Glasses should be worn daily, because in contrast to myopia, regular wearing of glasses can contribute to improvement.

This can lead to the fact that after a certain time the eyes can work again without support. Strabismus belongs in the hands of a specialist. Depending on the cause, an ophthalmologist or neurologist should be consulted.

Duration and prognosis of a visual impairment

The duration or prognosis depends on the type of visual defect. Normally, congenital visual defects cannot be cured, but they can be treated well. Nearsightedness (myopia) can be corrected with glasses, but usually it is necessary to wear glasses for life.

Long-sightedness (hyperopia) can be cured if glasses are worn regularly. Strabismus is more difficult to treat, it depends on the cause of the strabismus. It is important for all vision disorders that the child is regularly presented to the ophthalmologist to see and react to any improvement or deterioration.

It is also important to make sure that the recommendations of the treating doctor are followed, even if this is sometimes difficult to implement in children. In general, however, it can be said that vision problems in children are usually not dangerous and can be easily corrected. Only rarely is there a neurological problem, which is usually associated with other neurological disorders.
