Treatment – What can be done against the cadaveric poison?

The treatment of a market dead tooth is a root canal treatment. The root canal filling can be done with thermoplastic or stable root filling material, which means that either prefabricated pins are inserted or compressed with a liquid filling material. Already root-filled teeth with persistent chronic inflammation can be treated either by revision of the old filling and renewed root filling or by apicoectomy, in which the root tip is surgically removed. Only if the above mentioned treatments do not work, the tooth must be removed.

How long does the treatment take?

The duration of a root canal treatment is usually three appointments approximately every week. During these appointments the canal system is prepared and disinfected and the root filling is finally placed in the now clean environment. The apicoectomy is a one-time appointment that can last from three quarters to one and a half hours. After both procedures, the patient waits about two to four weeks to see if the treatment has worked, the healing has been completed and the tooth is free of complaints.

Diagnosis

The concentration of mercaptans and thioether can be determined diagnostically by testing the sulcus fluid of the affected tooth. However, these only signal the presence of an inflammatory process. Usually the dentist palpates in the oral cavity and takes an x-ray of the suspected tooth.

Chronic inflammation under the root tip of the tooth is revealed by bone dissolution as a brightening in the x-ray. Furthermore, the affected tooth can react to knocking with a pain response, which also indicates apical periodontitis, an inflammation under the root tip.
