TreatmentTherapy

The therapy of lymphedema of the arms consists of various measures that should be used together. One of these is compression treatment. Special bandages compress the tissue in a targeted manner and facilitate lymph drainage.

So-called lymph drainage can also contribute to this. Trained therapists or doctors can reduce the swelling by massaging with their hands. However, it is also important for the patient to actively move the affected arm.

Special physiotherapeutic exercises can improve lymph drainage in the long term if performed regularly. In addition, good skin care is very important in the treatment of lymphedema of the arms. Due to the swelling, the skin is particularly susceptible to injuries and infections, which can negatively influence the course of the disease.

In the case of secondary lymphedema, the trigger can also be treated directly if necessary. For example, erysipelas should be treated with antibiotics at an early stage. In principle, movement involving the arms can have a positive effect on lymphedema.

Especially effective are movements in which the arms are above heart level, as this facilitates lymph drainage. Activity in which the arms hang down, such as when carrying heavy objects, should be avoided. It is best to have special exercises taught by a physiotherapist or to seek the advice of a doctor.

Overexertion should be avoided, as otherwise the lymphedema may worsen. Aquafitness and swimming are particularly recommended, as less pressure is exerted on the tissues in water and the lymph can be better transported out of the arms. Targeted movement exercises out of the water should only be performed with simultaneous compression treatment using suitable bandages or stockings for the arms.

Compression treatment is an important component in the treatment of lymphedema. The principle of this form of therapy is that targeted compression of the tissue promotes lymph drainage and reduces the edema in the arms. Compression is achieved with the help of compression bandages that are wrapped around the arm using a special technique. Adapted compression stockings are also used for the arms.
