Triamcinolone acetonide is commercially available as suspension for injection (Kenacort-A), solution for injection (Kenacort-A Solubile, Ledermix), crystal suspension (Triamcort Depot), paste (Kenacort-A Orabase), tincture (Kenacort-A + salicylic acid), nasal spray (Nasacort, Nasacort Allergo), cream (Pevisone + Econazole).

Structure and properties

Triamcinolone acetonide (C24H31FO6, Mr = 434.5 g/mol) is a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is a lipophilic derivative of triamcinolone.

Effects

Triamcinolone acetonide is a glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antiallergic, and antiproliferative effects. It has only a minor mineralocorticoid effect.

Indications

Triamcinolone acetonide approved for numerous indications:

  • As an injection suspension, it is used for allergic diseases, rheumatic diseases, acute attacks or exacerbations of degenerative and inflammatory joint diseases, bursitis, tendinitis, tendovaginitis, periostitis, fibrositis, shoulder-arm syndrome, tennis elbow, skin and hair diseases.
  • As a solution for injection, it is approved in all indications of therapy with glucocorticoids, when a rapid effect is to be achieved and oral treatment is not feasible, for example, in severe allergies, hypersensitivity reactions, oedema and shock.
  • As a crystal suspension: allergic diseases, skin diseases, rheumatic diseases, joint diseases, gout, other inflammatory diseases (bursa, tendon sheaths, periosteum, etc.).
  • As a paste, it is used for acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa (eg, aphthae, stomatitis).
  • In the form of a nasal spray, it is used for symptomatic treatment of hay fever and allergic rhinitis. see under triamcinolone acetonide nasal spray.
  • As a tincture in combination with salicylic acid: hyperkeratoses such as psoriasis vulgaris, eczema.
  • As a cream In combination with econazole: fungal skin infections.
  • Furthermore, it is used in dentistry.
