Trometamol is found as an excipient in drugs, for example, in liquid and semisolid dosage forms. It should not be confused with triethanolamine (trolamine).
Structure and properties
Trometamol (C4H11NO3, Mr = 121.1 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder or as colorless crystals and is readily soluble in water. It contains both hydroxyl groups and a primary amino group as functional groups. The pKa is about 8.
Effects
Trometamol has basic, emulsifying, and stabilizing properties. It is used as a base and for the preparation of buffers. Trometamol is also combined with the salt trometamol hydrochloride or hydrochloric acid for this purpose.
Indications for use
- As a pharmaceutical excipient, for example in eye drops, gels, biologics and injection solutions.
- For the production of active ingredient salts (e.g., fosfomycin, dexketoprofen, ketorolac).
