Tularemia (Rabbit Plague): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by tularemia (hare plague):

Respiratory system (J00-J99)

  • ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) – acute respiratory failure in the setting of multiorgan disease.
  • Pneumonia (pneumonia)

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Dacryocystitis (lacrimation) associated with oculoglandular tularemia.

Blood, hematopoietic organs – immune system (D50-D90).

  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) – acute coagulation disorder caused by excessive activation of coagulation.

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Erythema nodosum (synonyms: nodular erythema, dermatitis contusiformis, erythema contusiforme; plural: erythemata nodosa) – granulomatous inflammation of the subcutis (subcutaneous fat), also known as panniculitis, and a painful nodule (red to blue-red color; later brownish). The overlying skin is reddened. Localization: both lower leg extensor sides, on the knee and ankle joints; less frequently on the arms or buttocks.

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99).

  • Pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium)

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts-pancreas (pancreas) (K70-K77; K80-K87).

  • Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)
  • Liver abscesses (encapsulated collection of pus in the liver).

Mouth, esophagus (esophagus), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Appendicitis (appendicitis ~ appendicitis).
  • Enteritis (inflammation of the intestine, in the narrow sense an inflammation of the small intestine).
  • Peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum)

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

Other

  • Multi-organ failure (MODS, Multi organ dysfunction syndrome; MOF: Multi organ failure) – simultaneous or sequential failure or severe functional impairment of various vital organ systems of the body.
