Both are compensatory strategies to restore the seemingly threatened masculinity,” explains the DAK psychologist. The abuse of intoxicants is also a typical reaction. “Alcohol addiction often masks depression,” says Meiners. The dilemma: Since those affected are often unaware of this, only the symptoms are treated, but not the actual cause. “Mental illness and depression in men are an important field for continuing medical education,” Frank Meiners concludes. “As a result, these illnesses can be detected early and treated in a targeted manner.”
